Apart from the blue beaches and the green golf courses, Jupiter has numerous other attractions and parks including the Jupiter Lighthouse, a structure that dates back to 1860 and houses artifacts dating back to A.D. 970. The unofficial symbol of the city, the lighthouse periodically changes its exterior lights to honor fallen heroes or to demonstrate support for specific groups such as the police force. Tours of the Jupiter Lighthouse run daily and the adjacent museum presents more information regarding Jupiter history. Other legendary landmarks include the Maltz Theater, Florida’s largest not-for-profit theater; Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park, a sacred site because of its numerous battles during the Seminole Wars; and the Hibel Museum of Art, a gallery that originated in Palm Beach in 1977 and was later moved to Abacoa Town Center. Recreational parks in Jupiter such as Riverbend, Dubouis, Ocean Cay, and Carlin parks, offer water activities like paddle-boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. Furthermore, many Jupiter area parks are equipped with soccer fields, baseball diamonds, tot lots, basketball courts, outdoor grills, and restroom facilities. For a dose of salt therapy and vitamin D, Jupiter residents bask in the sun at public beaches, fish for Snook and Red Fish in the Intracoastal Waterway, snorkel along the reefs at Jupiter Inlet Colony, or paddleboard along the brackish waters of the Loxahatchee River, a federally designated “Wild and Scenic River.”

A relatively new downtown destination is Harbourside Place, a multi-use venue that is anchored by the Wyndham Grand Jupiter hotel and features high-end retail and specialty shops such as Chic Boutique, Francesca’s, A Pink Princess, Glitzy Girl, Pucci and Catana, Mark Joseph New York, JoFit, Chico’s, White House Black Market, and HMY Yachts. Dining establishments include Tiger Wood’s signature restaurant The Woods; Tommy Bahama; Calaveras Cantina; Too Bizarre; Burger Fi; Bravo; Another Broken Egg Café; and Johnny Swirls. Situated on the Intracoastal Waterway, patrons may park their boat at the dock and enjoy live music at the amphitheater. Harbourside Place hosts several events each month including live music on the waterfront, outdoor movies, and puppy socials.

Another popular attraction is Abacoa Town Center which features numerous shops, restaurants, and family-inclusive events. Roger Dean Stadium, home of the Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads, is also located off Main Street in Abacoa. Jupiter is pleased to host spring training camps for the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium. Additionally, the stadium is frequently the spot for seasonal events such as Jupiter’s Fourth of July firework celebration, Easter Egg Hunt Extravaganza, and Tommy Hutton baseball camps.

Although Harbourside Place and Abacoa Town Center are popular venues year round, many Jupiter foodies frequent local joints such as U-Tiki, Dive Bar, Hog Snapper, Leftovers, Food Shack, Guanabanas, and Kee Grill. Children residing in Jupiter enjoy top-rated public schools including Limestone Elementary, Lighthouse / Beacon Cove, Jupiter Elementary, Jupiter Middle, Independence Middle, and Jupiter High School. Highly praised private schools such as Jupiter Christian, All Saints, Pine School, and Benjamin School are also nearby.

The history of Jupiter begins with the Hobe Indian Tribe, the first inhabitants of the territory near the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. Historians agree the town Jupiter first originated between 1763 and 1783 after Spain ceded Florida to Britain. The name itself is a result of an Anglican phonetic mishap. Mapmakers mistook the Spanish spelling “Jobe” referring to the Hobe Indians, and recorded it as Jove, the Roman name for Zeus, god of light. The British then changed it to the name of their god, Jupiter. Jupiter’s consort is Juno; hence the name of Jupiter’s neighboring town. Today, Jupiter is home to more than 60,000 jovial residents, who still celebrate Coastal Living’s 2012 accolade of the “9th Happiest Seaside Town in America.”
